the kitchen table and chairs.....

are (just about) finished....
they started out looking like this
as i blogged about here.
i just need to wax the pedestal.  i was too tired today and i wanted to show you how it turned out.
we both love it.  no one else has seen it yet so we haven't gotten any unbiased opinions.
i painted the apron of the table and the two stripes on the pedestal for some visual interest and to tie in the chairs with the table.
you can see that the top of the table has been waxed but not the apron or base.
the table has the leaf in it right now but we usually just use it when we have company.
it has already lightened up the space and we love it. ( it looks less blue than in this picture.  the other pictures are more true to color.) i am still trying to decide if i want to paint the ball in the ball and claw foot in the blue as well.
we still have to paint the cabinets and replace that crappy piece of crap flooring....i'll give you the 411 on that flooring disaster soon.
i used the annie sloan chalk paint in old white for the table and i used a mixture of old white, louis blue and duck egg for the chairs.
i also used minwax paste wax in clear for the table top.  it worked beautifully.

i am working on this piece next..
i got a gallon of the prettiest pale pink paint for free so i thought i would try it out on this little desk.
i found three of these chairs the other day at goodwill for $5.00 apiece.
i think the seat cover alone is worth $10.00, don't you think?
snort!!!
i got three of them.....and painted one of them with the old white chalk paint.
i found some cute pink and white pinstripe fabric for the chair seat.  i can't wait to see how they both
look together.  i'll share that in an upcoming post.
i hope everyone is having a great fourth of july weekend....
we are!

five dollars never looked so good!!!!

the chair started out in really good shape. it's a nice heavy cast iron.  not a bad paint job and the cushion was in great condition.  the paint job was a little beat up, but that's to be expected with it's age.  the original fabric for the seat cover under this tapestry was an olive green velvet.
i posted about where it came from here.
the tapestry seat cover was pretty but a little old-fashioned looking.
the legs were gracefully curved and
the back had a pretty flower and vase detail.
but it was a little a lot dated and grandma-ish.
the gold detail is always the first clue that something is dated.
i felt that it needed a dose of fun and modern
so
i sprayed it a glossy white paint
and recovered the seat in a fun, modern and graphic fabric.
i love this print....
it feels younger and grown up all at the same time......and way more hip....
chair: craigslist $5.00
fabric: hobby lobby about $2.50
spray paint: home depot $3.50
total: $11.00

goodwill hunting.....

i scored this chair at the goodwill last fall for $4.99.  it reminded me of a kings throne
(i don't know why, it just did)
it had a pleather dark green seat cover that was ripped
and some structural issues.
but it had some really nice lines and some cool detailing on the back.

i sanded it down and filled the defects.  the hubster primed it with kilz spray paint...
and then sprayed it rustoleum aqua.
it was a little bright so i brought it down with a light coat of sepia glaze
made by mixing ralph lauren glaze with some brown acrylic paint.
i found some fabric in the clearance bin at joann's fabric and recovered the seat.  when i removed the ugly green pleather cover, the padding was in good shape.  i threw it into the washer and ran it through a hand wash cycle and air dried it.
the glazing gave it a very subtle color that toned down the aqua really well.
i love the way it turned out.  and for five dollars,
what a bargain....

have a happy wednesday!!

Restoration of the chair - a master class

28 September 2010
Many of the house there chairs that they would like to restore or change their appearance. I suggest to do the restoration of the chair with a master class from the blog "Cameras and chaos" and my comments.
Anyone, even the oldest and most handsome chair can not find a second life if its color and change the seat. Restoration of the chair will help to transform the old and out-of-date chair in the new and trendy. This chair is made of beige into a nondescript white handsome man with a seat of fashionable colors. How did this happen? Very simple!
Originally the chair was so - and an old bezhevenkim. The author bought it at a garage sale for only $ 10 to redo it. She wrote in her blog that he was originally inspired her disgust, although like its shape and detail.

Since he took off the seat and painted white acrylic paint. Acrylic paint must-varnish - acrylic or alkyd, since it is not strong enough.
The shape of the old seats were cut from a soft foam base - now sit in a chair would be very nice!
But the author - breadboard with a knife cut from a piece of foam rubber seat.
With furniture staples (sold in hardware and is worth quite a bit - RUB 200) consolidated the foam on the seat, pinning his flannel cloth.

And now wrapped steering wheel and front seat as a stapler consolidated.

That turned out so beautiful chair!

the translated post.

i think it translates in such a charming way.  like how some of it doesn't makes sense at all in english.... and it tickles me that someone in russia thought that my post was worthy of their blog halfway around the world...

i love blogging......
